Laugharne

Character Cottage in Laugharne West Wales

Laugharne is a secluded village set on the coastal estuary of the river Taf in Carmarthen Bay. At its centre is the 12th century Castle and gardens which dominates the coastal views. At one time Laugharne was an important port having 57 pubs to serve the maritime population, however today it is far more peaceful and tranquil. Most of the pubs have now gone but many of the names live on in the cottage names around the village. DSCF2484

The peaceful ambiance of Laugharne attracted poet Dylan Thomas who lived in the boat house (see right) over looking the sea. In his writing shed just a few minutes walk from Daffodil Cottage he wrote his most famous work, a play for voices “Under Milk Wood” basing it on the village (renamed Llareggub) and its inhabitants. Each summer there is a Dylan Festival and his former home is a museum dedicated to his life and work. Dylan is buried in the local church yard.

The Dylan Thomas connection has attracted Hollywood stars and US Presidents to visit and Men Behaving Badly star and the voice of Bob the Builder, Neil Morrissey, to invest in Browns Hotel, The Three New Mariners Pub and the luxury Hurst House.

Being at the centre of Carmarthen Bay, with Gower on one side and Tenby on the other, it is ideally placed to explore this beautiful region. Being just 4 miles off the A40, which via the M4 stretches right across South Wales, getting to Laugharne and its surrounding areas is easy.
